The Outer Banks of North Carolina: Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and the Northern Beaches

North Carolina’s beautiful Outer Banks shelter the Carolina coastline from the Atlantic Ocean for 130 miles.  A large portion of the Outer Banks is made up of the protected Cape Hatteras National Seashore, leaving the pure and simple beauty of nature to be discovered.  In other areas, there are plenty of restaurants, a variety of interesting shops, and a number of accommodations, ranging from simple family campgrounds and economical hotels to luxurious resorts and the popular Outer Banks rentals.

The Outer Banks northern beaches are full of fun activities for all types of tastes.  At the utmost northern tip in Corolla, 4X4 vehicles have access to 12 sandy miles of beaches n Carova Beach.  The 4X4 beaches feature beautiful vacation homes throughout the sand dunes and the wild horses walk about freely for amazing views.  The 4X4 beaches are a favorite destination for fishing, beachcombing, and swimming.  Parking is allowed anywhere on the beach after the first few miles, so load up your beach toys, lounge chairs, and your Coleman cooler and enjoy a full day on the beach!

If you don’t have a 4 wheel drive, you still have an opportunity to see the famous wild horses of the Outer Banks.  There are tours and jeep rides available through the beautiful beachside that will give you an up close view of these rare creatures.  You can also find kite surfing, kayak, and jet ski rentals all along the northern beaches, as well as parasailing opportunities.  When you tire of the sun and surf, there are a variety of restaurants with local cuisine and plenty of unique specialty gift shops.  The Currituck Lighthouse is another popular attraction along the northern beaches.

Just off the main entry road to the Outer Banks, US-158, you will find Kitty Hawk, NC.  Kitty Hawk was the original location the infamous Wright brothers arrived at in the 1900’s when they planned to first test their aviation machine.  Kitty Hawk offers guests an RV park, as well as a tent campground, and a variety of hotels, inns, cottages, and Outer Banks rentals.

South of Kitty Hawk is the town of Kill Devil Hills, where Orville and Wilbur Wright flew the very first airplane.  Visitors can learn about the history of aviation at the Wright Brothers Memorial and museum.  Kill Devil Hills offers a number of public beach accesses, one with lifeguards and restrooms, and a variety of hotels, many of which accept pets.  This historical Outer Banks town is also home to several restaurants.
